About John
John works from his woodturning studio in Carrowbaun, Killaloe using traditional methods and local timbers where possible.
John uses a wide variety of timbers such as Yew, Bog Oak, Elm, Holly and Apple. Each type of wood has its own characteristics which John tries to accentuate in each of his pieces to show off the wood’s natural beauty.
John’s main interest is in creating functional pieces, such as natural edged chopping boards, cheese boards and lamp bases. In recognition of the Brian Boru 2014 millennium celebrations, John has also recreated a limited edition Celtic chess board game which was documented as having been played in Brian Boru’s time. John has also created a range of children’s wooden swords and shields to commemorate the last High King of Ireland, who reigned from Killaloe.
